Dr James Muecke: Defeat Diabetes Medical Advisory Panelist

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness amongst working age adults in Australia and the fastest growing cause of vision loss amongst our First Nations people.

100,000 Australians now have sight-threatening eye disease due to diabetes. And 90% of this threat is due to type 2 diabetes, an avoidable man-made dietary disease developing in over 100,000 Australians every year.

Most ophthalmologists would be aware that type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Very few would be aware that it is also potentially reversible. There are three clinically proven methods to put type 2 into remission, the most powerful and least risky being therapeutic carbohydrate restriction utilising real food. Remission of type 2 diabetes is now in Australia’s National Diabetes Strategy.

For nearly three years, Dr Muecke has been raising awareness amongst his patients regarding the opportunity for remission of their disease. Virtually all were unaware of this sight- and life-giving opportunity.

Ophthalmologists would likely see the majority of Australia’s 1.2 million people known to have type 2 diabetes. Dr Muecke therefore believes that ophthalmologists are well-placed to initiate the critical discussion regarding remission with their patients. This would help to both raise awareness of the opportunity amongst patients and their GPs and combat the devastating personal, social and economic impact of type 2 in Australia.

Dr Muecke has numerous patients with sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy who have now put their type 2 into remission. This is a deeply satisfying experience for any clinician dealing with a devastating avoidable complication of an avoidable disease. In many of these patients Dr Muecke has also noticed regression of their diabetic macular oedema.

Dr Muecke has also noted regression of retinal vein occlusion related macular oedema in patients with type 2 diabetes who are treated with therapeutic carbohydrate restriction.
