The Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (ASO) is committed to safeguarding Ophthalmology practice and the accessibility of eye health services in Australia.
The ASO represents the interests of not only Australian Ophthalmologists — eye surgeons — but their patients.
We know the role of the ASO is important to many Australians, with 9 in 10 viewing ‘sight’ as their most valued sense.
The ASO supports its members in choosing the surgical methods they respectively believe best support their patients and deliver a high standard in clinical outcomes through eye surgery.
A patient’s choice to undergo any surgical procedure or medical treatment is unique to the individual and should be made with consideration of the advice of their doctor and/or surgeon.
When it comes to eye health, it is important to know there are many different surgical and treatment options available to Australian patients, and all are safe and effective.
The ASO has always fought to ensure choice in medicine, choice of private medical insurance, choice of doctors, choice of hospitals, and choice of procedures.
Patients experiencing symptoms impacting their vision or general eye health should speak to their General Practitioner or Optometrist, and where necessary, obtain a referral to an Ophthalmologist.
All Australian Ophthalmologists are highly trained and remain qualified and informed of best available practice.
