‘Colour the World’ of Surgical Eye Care

08th July 2025

Communities across Australia and the globe are being encouraged to “see the world of eye surgery in colour” this August.

As part of its annual World Ophthalmologist Day campaign, the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (ASO) is launching its first international colouring competition to shine a spotlight on the work of eye surgeons everywhere.

ASO Chief Executive Officer Katrina Ronne said it is an activity for all ages, with an ‘adult’ category included for those who dabble in the practice for their own stress relief and mindfulness.

“Art is often described as bringing people together, which is exactly our aim this year,” Ms Ronne said.

“We have created an international movement with World Ophthalmologist Day and want to keep the conversation and voices growing — especially with our friends and peers abroad.”

World Ophthalmologist Day is observed annually on August 8 and celebrates the work of all specialists in medical and surgical eye disease.

Ms Ronne said the ASO launched its inaugural World Ophthalmologist Day campaign in 2023.

“We sought to raise the profile of Australian ophthalmologists, increase community awareness about their preeminent role in eye health, and encourage recognition and appreciation for the profession through the hashtag and campaign concept, ‘Thank an Ophthalmologist’,” she said.

“It was once a lesser-known date on the calendar but the work we have been doing in recent years is contributing to a positive shift, where ophthalmologists — eye surgeons — are ‘seen’ for the vital work they do.”

The colouring competition is being hosted online via the ASO website, with entrants encouraged to further share their submissions on social media and wherever they engage with others.

Winners will be announced by Monday, 25 August 2025 and receive a gift pack — posted to wherever they live in the world.
